Does your child want everything a friend has? It's hard to say no, but there are time you have to say no. Even if you had a deprived childhood with not much material things, don't feel like you owe your child everything because that's the key to happiness. It is not, but it is the key to more debt. Just because kids at school own something does not make them better people. Once you start giving them whatever they want it turns into a vicious cycle and it is very hard to stop. Oftentimes, parents feel like they are providing for their children if they give them whatever they want. True "providing for the children" is nutritious food, shelter, transportation and lots of love and support. What you should be concerned with is if they are doing alright in school and get along with their classmates. If what your child wants enriches their life culturally and intellectually, then think about whether it is cost effective for you to spend the money if you are on a tight budget. |

Don't be using your credit cards to buy unnecessary items for your child. If you have to save for it, or even better teach your child the value of money. If he or she wants the item badly enough, then they can work a couple of small jobs or chores to learn to save for it. Times are tight now, and they must learn how to save and spend money when they are young. As a parent be aware how much money you are spending on your children. Many parents don't let the other one know how much they are spending on the children, so money problems can happen if both parents are not in agreement how to spend money. Before you child starts a new school year, make a list of the absolute necessities that they will need for their new grade. Check at your local discount stores, even Dollar stores as they carry some school items, and for good sales that are going on year round. Online stores offer excellent deals too, so do a search online for discounted items.
